‘Unprecedented’ grade for aspiring environmental academic

A student achieved the seemingly impossible, not only achieving a first class degree, but earning an ‘unprecedented’ mark of 100% for his dissertation, winning him a top award at the University of Cumbria’s graduation ceremonies and the admiration of academics.

Carlisle councillor Calvin graduates with vision for fairer society

A newly elected councillor from Carlisle was one of 1000 students to graduate in spectacular setting of Carlisle Cathedral last week. Calvin Rodgerson, 21, from Carlisle was elected to the ward of Newtown and Morton North in May, and a mere two months later graduated with a degree in social work.

University was always going to be a challenge for Dominic Bingham who had been at a school for the deaf before starting his outdoor adventure and environment degree. And at a graduation ceremony in Carlisle Cathedral, he celebrated his triumph over adversity, especially remembering his father Mark who died last year.

There was never any question that David Osarhieme Nduka-Oladiti would study for a degree, it was almost in his DNA. A tradition set by his grandfather of moving from Nigeria to attend an English university, most family members followed, gaining a Masters in a diverse range of subjects. After moving to London with his mother from Nigeria’s Benin City as a child, no one could have imagined David wouldn’t study in the capital when the time came - until he discovered 'the greenness' of Cumbria.

As a young girl Amelia Murphy dislocated her knee playing football and told the paramedics who treated her that she wanted to join the emergency services. “Join us,” they quipped, “it’s the best job in the world.” She said she wished they could have seen her graduate at Carlisle Cathedral this week with a paramedic practice Diploma in Higher Education from University of Cumbria (UoC).
